UK-based smelter Alvance British Aluminium has signed a 10-year lease agreement with VTG Rail UK for 20 newly commissioned 4-axle powder tank wagons to transport alumina between the Port of Blyth and its Fort William smelter in Scotland. The modern wagons will replace older 2-axle models dating from the 1980s, nearly doubling payload per trip and reducing annual rail journeys from 107 to 76 — a 30% cut — improving both efficiency and environmental performance. The move is part of a multimillion-pound logistics upgrade that includes a new rail loading facility and plans to retrofit the fleet with VTG’s iWagon technology for real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance.
