China Approves New Industrial Standards for Magnesium Smelting, Highlighting Green Development

Published: Jul 18, 2025 17:10
[SMM Magnesium News] On July 8, 2025, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology officially announced the approval and release of 406 industrial standards, three of which involve magnesium: the "Technical Specification for Energy-Saving Diagnosis of Magnesium Smelters" (YS/T 1801-2025), the "Technical Specification for Energy-Saving Supervision of Magnesium Smelting Industry" (YS/T 1802-2025), and the "Technical Specification for Recycling and Treatment of Magnesium Smelting Slag" (YS/T 1804-2025). These standards were jointly formulated by the Fugu County Magnesium Industry Association, in collaboration with multiple key magnesium enterprises in Fugu, major domestic magnesium enterprises, and top research institutions, and will be fully implemented starting from February 1, 2026. The approved industrial standards fill the technical gaps in energy-saving diagnosis, supervision, and solid waste resource utilization in China's magnesium smelting sector, marking a crucial step forward for Fugu's magnesium industry on the path of green, low-carbon, and circular development. They also set a "Fugu model" for the high-quality development of the national magnesium industry.

[SMM Chromium Flash] Vedanta Group Includes Ferrochrome in ₹21,000 Crore India Metals Investment Drive
Vedanta Group has invested more than ₹21,000 crore through FY2025-26 in ongoing projects to expand metal production and capacity across aluminium, zinc, value-added alloys, copper, steel, nickel and ferrochrome, as part of a broader push to strengthen India's domestic metals base for electric vehicle and critical minerals supply chains. Separately, as part of a critical minerals strategy under which Vedanta has secured 10 critical mineral blocks spanning copper, nickel-chromium-PGE, tungsten, graphite, vanadium, rare earth elements and potash, with exploration activities currently underway across five of the ten blocks, though the company did not specify which blocks are among those five. Vedanta did not disclose a ferrochrome-specific investment figure, production capacity, or plant location within the announcement, leaving the scale of its ferrochrome ambitions, relative to its far more detailed aluminium, zinc, copper and nickel plans, still to be clarified.
