On July 15th, South32 confirmed that the future of the Mozal Aluminium smelter in Mozambique remains uncertain due to difficulties in securing a reliable electricity supply beyond March 2026. The smelter’s current power purchase agreement with state-owned hydroelectric provider Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) is set to expire in early 2026. However, Mozal and HCB have so far failed to agree on a new tariff, with affordability cited as a key issue. Adding to concerns, HCB has warned that ongoing drought conditions could further threaten the stability of hydroelectric power generation. South32 stated it is now reassessing the carrying value of the smelter and expects to record an impairment expense in its FY2025 financial results. The company also noted that production guidance for FY2026 is currently under review.
