[Heavy floods in the south and north; China officially enters the critical period of flood control from late July to early August]
Starting today (July 16), China has fully entered the critical period of flood control from late July to early August, which is the most complex and severe period for flood control throughout the year. This year, China entered the flood season early, and the extreme characteristics of floods and droughts have become prominent. The Ministry of Water Resources predicts that during the period from late July to early August, there will be obvious regional and phased droughts and floods in China, with heavy floods in the south and north, and heavier floods in the north than in the south. Droughts will be more severe in the central and north-west China regions. Two to three typhoons are expected to make landfall in China, and there may be strong typhoons moving northward to affect north China. Local extreme torrential rains and floods will occur frequently and severely. Major floods may occur in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, the Daqing River and Yongding River (the three rivers in the Haihe River Basin), the Huntai River (a tributary of the Liaohe River) in the Songliao River Basin, and the Jilin section of the Songhua River. Phased droughts may occur in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, JAC, and the central and northern parts of Xinjiang.
