On July 15th, ABB announced its Process Automation division has joined the Arctial aluminium partnership, supporting the development of a potential low-carbon primary aluminium smelter in western Finland.
The Arctial project aims to assess the feasibility of building a manufacturing facility in the Kokkola and Kronoby regions. If realized, it would be continental Europe’s first new primary aluminium development in over 30 years.
ABB will lead evaluations on electrification and automation, including high-power rectifiers, transformers, substations, and high-voltage switchgear. The partnership will also develop a front-end engineering and design (FEED) plan, early works scope, timeline, budget, and safety assessments.
The project intends to rely on renewable energy sources and integrate global and local expertise to build an efficient, low-emission, and safe operation.
A final investment decision (FID) is expected between 2026 and 2027.
