On July 14th, Alcoa Corporation and its joint venture partner, Ignis Equity Holdings, confirmed the restart of the San Ciprián aluminium smelter in Spain will resume after months of delay due to a nationwide power outage in April. The outage had affected both the smelter and the associated refinery, prompting a pause in restart activities until the Spanish Government could provide a detailed explanation and mitigation plan. Following a government report and direct meetings with officials, Alcoa said it has received assurances of improved grid resilience and support for competitive energy supply. Rob Bear, Alcoa Vice President for Spain, stated: “We have reviewed the Government’s report and received commitments on investments to strengthen grid reliability.” Alcoa now expects to incur a net loss of $90–110 million from the smelter in 2025. The full restart is targeted for completion by mid-2026.
