On July 14th, Egyptalum signed a power purchase agreement with Norwegian renewable energy provider Scatec ASA to construct a 1000MW solar power station at its Nag Hammadi aluminium facility in Egypt. The $563 million project will be implemented over 24 months in two phases of 500MW each, and includes the installation of 200MW of battery storage. Scatec will finance, build, and operate the plant, supplying clean energy to meet a significant portion of Egyptalum’s electricity demand. Key goals of the project include: Reducing operational costs, improving production efficiency, enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian aluminium, cutting traditional energy use and carbon emissions and aligning with international sustainability standards. Over 50% of Egyptalum’s production is exported, primarily to the European Union. The solar project will also help Egyptalum comply with the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which takes effect in 2026. The agreement was signed in Cairo in the presence of Egyptian and Norwegian officials, including Egypt’s Minister of the Public Business Sector and the Norwegian ambassador.
