






US President Trump announced on the 8th that a 50% tariff would be imposed on imported copper, posing a severe challenge to Chile, the world's largest copper producer.
On the 11th, Chilean President Boric stated that Chile would defend its copper industry.
Chilean President Boric: On the issue of copper, there are no divisions within Chile. We are united in defending our copper industry. This broad political consensus enables us to safeguard our sovereignty over resources and determine how we use them to build a more equitable and livable world. As a nation, we possess institutional advantages that allow us to face various contingencies in this turbulent world.
Boric also stated that Chile has long practiced multilateralism and respected international law, while demanding that the international community also respect international law. Chile will adhere to trade diversification and safeguard the well-being of its people.
Chile is the world's largest copper producer and the largest supplier of copper to the US. After the US announced on the 8th that a 50% tariff would be imposed on imported copper, Chilean President Boric stated on the 9th that Chile was awaiting official communication from the US to determine the specifics of its tariff policy, hoping to reach a tariff consensus with the US through consultations.
