According to overseas media reports, Indonesia's Inalum recently announced plans to expand the capacity of its aluminum smelter. Currently, Inalum's aluminum production capacity stands at 300,000 mt/year, and it will increase to 900,000 mt/year after the second-phase expansion. The company is exploring the possibility of further increasing capacity to 1 million-1.05 million mt/year, depending on the local power supply situation. Melati Sanita, the general manager of Inalum, explained that the insufficient power supply in Kuala Tanjung is the main reason for promoting the expansion of the Mempawah smelter. The government's planned nuclear power plant in Kalimantan aligns with the company's expansion needs for its aluminum smelter, as aluminum production is relatively environmentally friendly and aligns with the direction of green energy transition. Indonesia's aluminum industry is currently in a rapid development phase, attracting significant investment from Chinese enterprises due to its abundant bauxite resources and low-cost energy advantages. Currently, Indonesia has become one of the hotspots for global aluminum production capacity expansion, with planned total capacity exceeding 10 million mt. However, insufficient power supply and infrastructure bottlenecks remain major challenges.
