Initial assays from the HCK joint venture project, announced on July 10, revealed a 6.9-meter lithium-rich intercept at 174.6 meters depth (drill hole MWOG0002), averaging 2.11% Li₂O with a high-grade 3.45-meter zone grading 3.20% Li₂O.

UK-based Aterian Plc, in partnership with mining giant Rio Tinto, has uncovered significant lithium deposits during exploratory drilling in Rwanda's Southern Province. Initial assays from the HCK joint venture project, announced on July 10, revealed a 6.9-meter lithium-rich intercept at 174.6 meters depth (drill hole MWOG0002), averaging 2.11% Li₂O with a high-grade 3.45-meter zone grading 3.20% Li₂O.

Investment Milestone Reached
Rio Tinto has activated its Phase 1 option under the 2023 JV agreement, securing a 51% stake in the HCK license. The deal permits the multinational to increase ownership to 75% upon completing a $7.5 million investment within three years. The 2,750-hectare concession contains 19 identified pegmatite zones bearing lithium, cesium, and tantalum mineralization.

Exploration Outlook
Aterian CEO Simon Rollason noted the findings—derived from just two of twelve mapped prospects—demonstrate "competing geological potential" despite being preliminary. Technical teams are currently analyzing the deposit's continuity and commercial viability, with decisions on Phase 2 exploration expected by late 2025.

Economic Implications
Rwanda's mining sector, contributing 3% to GDP and employing 72,000 workers as of July 2024, could see transformative growth from lithium development. With global EV demand raising, the discovery positions Rwanda as a potential player in the battery metals supply chain.

According to the latest data from the Passenger Car Association, in December 2025, producers with new energy wholesale sales exceeding 10,000 units accounted for 93% of the total wholesale sales of passenger NEVs that month. Based on preliminary January data, these producers achieved sales of 830,000 units in January. As most producers have already locked in their major sales figures, by applying the structural proportion from the previous month to the current month's data, the estimated wholesale sales of passenger NEVs nationwide in January were 900,000 units. According to comprehensive preliminary monthly association data: the estimated wholesale sales of NEVs by national passenger car producers in January 2026 were 900,000 units, up 1% YoY.
