On July 10th, Boliden announced that Sweden’s Land and Environment Court has approved its proposed remediation method at the Maurliden site. The new approach involves using paste—comprised of tailings, binding agents, and water—to backfill the Maurliden open pits and underground mines at Renström and Kankberg, instead of depositing tailings at the Hötjärn storage facility. The method is expected to extend the life of the Boliden Area by approximately 10 years, while reducing land use and enhancing tailings recycling. The company called the decision a major step forward for both environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.
