According to SMM, Indonesia’s Adaro—now operating as PT AlamTri Resources Indonesia Tbk—is building a 1.5 million-tonne-per-year aluminium smelter in three 500,000-tonne phases at the Kaltara Industrial Park (KIPI) in Tanah Kuning, North Kalimantan. Phases I and II are due to start up by the end of 2025 and in Q4 2026 respectively, each powered by captive coal-fired units. Phase III, scheduled for Q4 2029, will draw its green power from the 1,375 MW Mentarang Induk Hydroelectric Project being developed by PT Kayan Hydropower Nusantara (KHN). KHN aims to reach financial close in Q1 2026, to grid-connect in H2 2029, and to begin commercial operation in 2030. The plant’s output will be stepped up into the high-voltage transmission network and “wheeled” via a dedicated line to the KIPI park. KHN’s ownership is split 50%/25%/25% between PT Adaro Energy Indonesia Tbk, PT Kayan Patria Pratama, and Sarawak Energy Berhad (Maylasia Company).
