Australia's Fenix Resources officially commences mining at Beebyn-W11 iron ore mine

Published: Jul 2, 2025 18:09

On June 30, Australian miner Fenix Resources Limited (hereinafter referred to as Fenix) officially announced that mining operations had commenced at its Beebyn-W11 iron ore project, located in the Midwest region of Western Australia.

The project has a designed annual capacity of 1.5 million mt and is expected to ship its first iron ore cargo in Q3 2025, which will increase the company's total iron ore capacity to 4 million mt per year.

As of now, the infrastructure for the Beebyn-W11 iron ore project has been completed. Additionally, the private transportation line connecting Beebyn-W11 with Fenix's existing Iron Ridge iron ore project is nearing completion.

The road, approximately 17.6 kilometers long, will transport iron ore directly from the Beebyn-W11 project to Geraldton Port via the company's integrated transportation system.

Fenix stated that as mining operations progress at Beebyn-W11, the commissioning of the crushing and screening plant within the mine area will also be completed in July 2025.

About the Beebyn-W11 iron ore project

The Beebyn-W11 iron ore project is a high-grade iron ore deposit located in the Midwest region of Western Australia, approximately 20 kilometers from Fenix's Iron Ridge iron ore project.

The project currently has measured resources of approximately 20.5 million mt, with an average iron grade of 61.3%. The project's C1 cash cost is estimated to be AUD 77.5/wmt (approximately USD 50.4/wmt).

In October 2023, Fenix reached an agreement with Sinosteel Midwest Corporation, a subsidiary of Sinosteel Group, to secure the mining and export rights for 10 million mt of iron ore from the Beebyn-W11 project and completed the final feasibility study for the project in July 2024.

In March 2025, Fenix signed a mining and processing services contract worth approximately AUD 236 million (approximately USD 155 million) with mining services contractor MACA (a subsidiary of the Thiess Group) to accelerate the construction of the Beebyn-W11 iron ore project.

Before the holiday, the black chain is unlikely to see a trend-driven market [SMM Steel Industry Chain Weekly Report].
This week, ferrous metals were in the doldrums, with coking coal and coke staging a mid-week rise. At the beginning of the week, financial markets experienced sharp fluctuations, dragging down sentiment in the ferrous chain and leading to a pullback in futures. Mid-week, Indonesia's cut to coke production quotas drove coking coal and coke futures to lead the gains, though the impact was more pronounced on thermal coal, while coking coal's rise was largely sentiment-driven and short-lived. In the latter part of the week, finished products continued their seasonal inventory buildup, and support from the raw material side weakened, causing the entire ferrous chain to pull back. In the spot market, with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, purchasing activity slowed down further, with end-users only making limited, as-needed purchases at low prices.
