[SMM Magnesium News] Australia's Latrobe Magnesium has achieved a major breakthrough in the world's first "lignite fly ash hydrothermal extraction-electrolysis" process. The demonstration plant will commence production in early August 2025. This process leaches magnesium from fly ash of lignite power plants through hydrothermal methods, and then produces 99.8% pure magnesium through electrorefining, while simultaneously generating high-activity silicate building material raw materials. The project has received priority approval from the Environmental Protection Agency, completed equipment commissioning, and is expected to build a 100,000 mt commercial plant by 2027.
