Vietnam's Dong Nai Aluminum Smelter Closes Bauxite Industry Loop, Boosting Aluminum Production and GDP

Published: Jun 30, 2025 22:22
I. Vietnam's bauxite industry chain has finally achieved a closed loop, with the Dong Nai aluminum smelter filling the gap in aluminum production projects. Designed with an annual production capacity of 450,000 mt of aluminum, it will purchase the entire output of the Nhan Co alumina refinery and the Nhan Co alumina refinery in Lam Dong Province, addressing the aluminum semis import gap, creating high-paying jobs, and contributing $900 million to GDP annually.

II. The project investor is Chen Hongjun Metallurgical Co., Ltd., controlled by Chen Hongjun, a legendary figure in Vietnam's business community. Initially engaged in motorcycle distribution and assembly, the company transitioned into LPG operations and short-term rental services, dominating the household gas market in northern Vietnam and constructing the landmark Crowne Plaza West Hanoi Complex. It is expected to complete equipment installation and commence Phase I production in Q2 2026, Phase II in Q2 2027, and achieve full capacity in Phase I by Q1 2028. The Vietnam Dong Nai aluminum smelter project represents a significant exploration of industrial self-sufficiency, elevating Vietnam's position in Southeast Asia's aluminum industry chain, producing domestically scaled aluminum ingots, and marking a milestone in Vietnam's manufacturing sector upgrade.

Fed to Keep Large Banks' Capital Levels Unchanged, Postpones Stress Test Reforms Until 2027
The US Fed has announced that it will maintain the capital levels of large banks unchanged during the upcoming stress test cycle (corresponding to the 2026 cycle). At the same time, the US Fed is planning multidimensional reforms to this annual test, aiming to enhance its transparency. The US Fed's Vice Chair for Supervision, Bowman, revealed that adjustments to the stress capital buffer requirements for large banks will be postponed until 2027. This move is intended to provide the US Fed with sufficient time to evaluate potential flaws that may be exposed in its testing models when assessing banks' financial conditions under simulated economic downturn scenarios.
