EGA Successfully Tests Next-Gen Aluminum Smelting Technology EX, Paving Way for Large-Scale Industrialization

Published: Jun 30, 2025 22:14
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) announced today that its next-generation aluminum smelting technology, EX, has successfully produced its first batch of liquid aluminum in a test electrolytic cell. The trial, launched at the Al Taweelah site, is a crucial step towards the large-scale industrialization of this technology. It not only lays the foundation for EGA's future expansion of low-carbon primary aluminum capacity but also solidifies EGA's position as a preferred provider of smelting technology in the global aluminum industry. The trial will also validate the application of the aluminum industry's most advanced Industry 4.0 technologies. All of EGA's existing Industry 4.0 use cases will be integrated into this new technology, while the company is building cutting-edge digital capabilities centered around artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics. The significance of these electrolytic cells extends far beyond technological advancement alone. The development process of EX technology has been slow but steady. EGA initiated the design phase in 2024, followed by construction in the second half of 2024 (H2). Ten pilot-scale electrolytic cells were commissioned in June 2025, demonstrating a methodical and replicable process from R&D to commercialization. These pilot cells are equipped with various IoT sensors and utilize AI-based machine learning models, enabling real-time dynamic adjustments to enhance energy efficiency and production. Sichuan-Chongqing UHV AC Reinforcement Project Approved with 15.46 Billion Yuan Investment
Recently, the Sichuan-Chongqing UHV AC reinforcement project received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). With a total investment of 15.46 billion yuan, the project will construct two new 1000 kV substations in northern Sichuan and eastern Chongqing, adding 12 million kVA of transformer capacity, and build 2×490 km of 1000 kV double-circuit lines including the Chuanbei–Yudong–Bayue route. It is reported that this project is an important component of the Sichuan-Chongqing UHV AC backbone grid, capable of supporting the integration of the Xinjiang-to-Sichuan/Chongqing DC receiving-end converter stations and electricity consumption. It is also one of the 12 national planned power flexible mutual support projects, which is conducive to enhancing inter-provincial power mutual support, surplus-deficit complementation, and emergency accident assistance capabilities between Sichuan and Chongqing. The project is of great significance for ensuring safe and reliable power supply in our province and supporting the construction of a unified national electricity market.
