Ghana has recently made significant progress in the development of bauxite resources. Last week, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Ghana's Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, signed a lease agreement authorizing the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) to oversee the development of the entire industry chain value of bauxite, from mining, alumina refining to aluminum smelting, in order to tap into the potential of the country's abundant bauxite resources and drive the national industrialization process. Ghana boasts impressive bauxite reserves, estimated at up to 920 million mt, mainly distributed in areas such as Awaso, Nyinahin, and Kyebi. However, these resources have long been underutilized. Now, under the impetus of President John Dramani Mahama, Ghana is striving to change this situation and maximize the benefits derived from its natural resources. Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, CEO of GIADEC, introduced to the media that the signing of this lease agreement marks GIADEC's government authorization to lead the exploration and commercialization of Ghana's bauxite resources. As a key component of the new strategy, GIADEC plans to collaborate closely with miners, engineers, and financiers from the private sector to build a Ghana-led bauxite industry value chain.
