On June 27, 2025, Japan's chief trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, reiterated that Japan cannot accept the U.S. proposal to impose a 25% tariff on imported cars. He noted that Japanese automakers produce approximately 3.3 million vehicles annually in the United States, a figure significantly higher than the 1.37 million vehicles they export to the U.S. Additionally, he highlighted that Japanese automakers have invested over $60 billion in the U.S. and created 2.3 million jobs locally.
