Canadian company Standard Lithium has taken the lead in proving the feasibility of direct lithium extraction (DLE) from the brine in the Smackover Formation in southern Arkansas, US. The company recently received US$225 million in funding from the US Department of Energy (DOE). Its core processing plant in Lafayette County is expected to produce 22,500 mt of battery-grade lithium chemicals annually after its commissioning in 2028, which will quadruple the US lithium capacity. Energy giants such as ExxonMobil and Chevron have already staked out hundreds of thousands of acres in the region. Phase I of the project will create 100 direct jobs and is expected to transform the economic landscape of the area.
