According to Ryuichi Umeshita, Mazda's Chief Technology Officer, the Iconic SP concept car equipped with a rotary engine will become the spiritual successor to the RX-7. The hybrid system of the Iconic SP concept car has a combined output power of 365 horsepower, utilizing a dual-rotor engine as a range extender, paired with a single motor and a battery pack. The production version is expected to retain this configuration, but Mazda is also considering a scheme where the rotary engine serves as the main drive system. In addition, the engineering team is developing an upgraded version of the rotary range extender for the MX-30 crossover to meet US emission standards and enhance output power.
