[EU Aluminium Scrap Exports Surge, Raising Concerns over Supply and Carbon Goals]

Published: Jun 26, 2025 22:14
Following the U.S. imposition of a 50% tariff on aluminium, EU scrap exports surged, reaching 345,000 tonnes in Q1 2025. Increased U.S. demand—driven by domestic restrictions—has led to higher prices and declining scrap inventories in Europe, prompting industry associations to call for export duties or authorisation measures.

European Aluminium warns that unchecked exports could undermine the EU's secondary aluminium production and its carbon goals, particularly with CBAM set to take effect in 2026. In 2024, EU scrap consumption rose 1.9% to 76.6 million tonnes, but current export trends risk creating shortages. The price gap between EU and U.S. markets has reached up to $750 per tonne, opening an arbitrage window and intensifying pressure on EU regulators.
