On June 11, 2025, Ju Anran, Senior Manager of SMM Aluminum Products, and Liu Xinyi, Analyst of SMM Aluminum Products, led a delegation to visit and tour PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Persero)'s aluminum smelter, rod plant, die-casting workshop, and port facilities located in Medan, Indonesia.

Company Profile

PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Persero), commonly known as Inalum, was established on January 6, 1976, initially as a joint venture between the Indonesian government (holding 10% stake) and the Japanese consortium Nippon Asahan Aluminium Co., Ltd. (holding 90% stake). Following several equity adjustments, the company completed its nationalization in December 2013 and officially became a wholly-owned subsidiary of PT Mineral Industri Indonesia (Persero) (MIND ID). Headquartered in Batu Bara District, North Sumatra Province, the company relies on two hydropower plants on the Asahan River—the Siguragura Hydropower Plant and the Tangga Hydropower Plant (with a total installed capacity of 317 MW)—to provide a total installed capacity of 603 MW, delivering clean and low-cost electricity continuously and steadily to its smelter.

Inalum is primarily engaged in the smelting of locally sourced and imported alumina, with an annual production capacity of approximately 275,000 mt of primary aluminum. Its products include aluminum ingots, aluminum rods (billets), and casting alloys, which not only meet the needs of the downstream industries in Indonesia but are also exported to international markets such as Southeast Asia. As the first aluminum enterprise in Indonesia to be certified by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), Inalum is actively promoting intelligent upgrades and green, low-carbon development, contributing to the completeness and sustainability of the country's downstream mineral deep-processing industry chain.

During the field trip, the Inalum team not only provided detailed information to the SMM delegation on the current capacity utilization rate and future expansion plans but also explained on-site the key technological processes from aluminum liquid casting, aluminum rod extrusion, to die-casting part processing. They also comprehensively explained the port logistics, warehouse management, and ship loading operations, laying a solid foundation for in-depth cooperation between the two parties in areas such as energy optimization, production efficiency improvement, and downstream collaboration.
