[SMM Flash News: Surge in Imports of Unlisted Rare Earth Oxides in May] China's total imports of unlisted rare earth oxides from January to May 2025 were approximately 21,925.6 mt, down 8% YoY. However, imports in May saw a significant increase, reaching approximately 9,076.4 mt, up 67% YoY and 39% MoM. According to miners, Myanmar ore production had just resumed in April, and there was a large local inventory. As the end of Q2 and the beginning of Q3 coincide with the rainy season, miners were concerned that weather conditions would hinder the transportation of ion-adsorption ore to China. Therefore, they accelerated transportation in April and May, leading to a surge in imports of unlisted rare earth oxides. It is expected that imports will decline in June and July.
