On June 19, 2025, Canada moved to speed up a 'Buy Canadian' policy after the US imposed a 50% tariff on Canadian aluminium and steel. This policy would require government projects to use Canadian metals to protect local producers and jobs. With US tariffs cutting Canadian exports and demand, Ottawa is considering more trade measures and closing loopholes for non-FTA imports. Large upcoming infrastructure and defense projects in Canada could boost domestic metal demand, while talks with the US continue, but the risk of more trade restrictions remains.
