The global copper market is currently undergoing structural changes. The US is accelerating the absorption of overseas copper cathode resources through policy measures, driving a reconfiguration of trade flows. On the supply side, the shortage of copper mines is expected to persist until 2028, while the continuous expansion of global smelting capacity further intensifies competition for raw materials, leading to a sustained decline in processing fees and compressing profit margins for enterprises.
As the world's largest copper consumer, China's industry chain faces three major challenges: rising external dependence on upstream resources, overcapacity in midstream processing, and suppressed downstream demand due to high copper prices. To help the industry navigate these changes, SMM is leading the compilation of the bilingual (Chinese-English) "2026 China Copper Industry Chain Distribution Map", jointly produced by Shandong Humon Smelting Co., Ltd. and SMM.
