






On June 11, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) released the production and sales data of the automotive industry for May. The data showed that in May, China's auto production and sales reached 2.649 million units and 2.686 million units, respectively, up 1.1% MoM and 3.7% MoM, and up 11.6% YoY and 11.2% YoY, respectively.
From January to May, China's auto production and sales reached 12.826 million units and 12.748 million units, respectively, up 12.7% YoY and 10.9% YoY. The production growth rate narrowed by 0.2 percentage points compared to January-April, while the sales growth rate expanded by 0.1 percentage point.
In May, China's NEV sales reached 1.307 million units, with 212,000 units exported.
In terms of NEVs,in May, China's NEV production and sales reached 1.27 million units and 1.307 million units, respectively, up 35% YoY and 36.9% YoY.New NEV sales accounted for 48.7% of total new auto sales.
From January to May, China's NEV production and sales reached 5.699 million units and 5.608 million units, respectively,up 45.2% YoY and 44% YoY. New NEV sales accounted for 44% of total new auto sales.
In terms of domestic sales,in May, domestic NEV sales reached 1.095 million units, up 6.8% MoM and 27.9% YoY. Among them, domestic passenger NEV sales reached 1.03 million units, up 7.8% MoM and 26.3% YoY; domestic new energy commercial vehicle sales reached 65,000 units, down 6.7% MoM and up 58.8% YoY.
In May, domestic NEV sales accounted for 51.3% of total domestic auto sales; domestic passenger NEV sales accounted for 54.7% of total domestic passenger vehicle sales; domestic new energy commercial vehicle sales accounted for 25.8% of total domestic commercial vehicle sales.
From January to May, domestic NEV sales reached 4.753 million units, up 40.8% YoY. Among them, domestic passenger NEV sales reached 4.47 million units, up 40% YoY; domestic new energy commercial vehicle sales reached 283,000 units, up 55.2% YoY.
From January to May, domestic NEV sales accounted for 46.3% of total domestic auto sales; domestic passenger NEV sales accounted for 50.1% of total domestic passenger vehicle sales; domestic new energy commercial vehicle sales accounted for 21.1% of total domestic commercial vehicle sales.
In terms of sales rankings,from January to May, the combined sales of the top 15 groups in China's NEV sales reached 5.337 million units, up 46.9% YoY, accounting for 95.2% of total NEV sales, 1.9 percentage points higher than the same period last year.
Exports: In May, China exported 212,000 NEV units, up 6.1% MoM and 1.2 times YoY. Among them, 204,000 passenger NEV units were exported, up 7.4% MoM and 1.1 times YoY; 8,000 new energy commercial vehicle units were exported, down 19.5% MoM and up 1.5 times YoY.
In May, China exported 138,000 battery electric vehicle (BEV) units, down 1.6% MoM and up 79.8% YoY; 74,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) units were exported, up 24% MoM and 2.4 times YoY.
From January to May, China exported 855,000 NEV units, up 64.6% YoY. Among them, 814,000 passenger NEV units were exported, up 60.6% YoY; 41,000 new energy commercial vehicle units were exported, up 2.3 times YoY.
From January to May, China exported 540,000 BEV units, up 30.3% YoY; 315,000 PHEV units were exported, up 2 times YoY.
In May, China's power battery installations reached 57.1 GWh, and exports amounted to 13.5 GWh.
According to the monthly power battery data for May 2025 released by the China Industrial Innovation Alliance for the Electric Vehicle Industry (CAIA),Production: In May, China's combined production of power and other batteries was 123.5 GWh, up 4.4% MoM and 47.9% YoY.
From January to May, China's cumulative production of power and other batteries was 568.1 GWh, up 62.6% YoY.
Sales: In May, China's sales of power and other batteries were 123.6 GWh, up 4.7% MoM and 58.1% YoY. Among them, power battery sales were 87.5 GWh, accounting for 70.8% of total sales, up 1.0% MoM and 54.1% YoY; other battery sales were 36.1 GWh, accounting for 29.2% of total sales, up 14.8% MoM and 68.7% YoY.
From January to May, China's cumulative sales of power and other batteries were 527.5 GWh, up 69.8% YoY. Among them, cumulative power battery sales were 391.4 GWh, accounting for 74.2% of total sales, up 56.2% YoY; cumulative other battery sales were 136.1 GWh, accounting for 25.8% of total sales, up 126.1% YoY.
Exports: In May, China exported a total of 19.0 GWh of power and other batteries, down 14.6% MoM and up 23.0% YoY. Total exports accounted for 15.4% of monthly sales. Among them, power battery exports reached 13.5 GWh, accounting for 71.1% of total exports, down 6.3% MoM and up 30.0% YoY. Exports of other batteries stood at 5.5 GWh, accounting for 28.9% of total exports, down 29.9% MoM and up 8.7% YoY.
From January to May, cumulative exports of power and other batteries in China reached 102.9 GWh, up 68.0% YoY. Cumulative exports accounted for 19.5% of cumulative sales in the first five months. Among them, cumulative exports of power batteries were 65.8 GWh, accounting for 63.9% of total exports, up 29.2% YoY. Cumulative exports of other batteries were 37.1 GWh, accounting for 36.1% of total exports, up 259.7% YoY.
In terms of battery installations, in May, power battery installations in China reached 57.1 GWh, up 5.5% MoM and up 43.1% YoY. Among them, ternary battery installations were 10.5 GWh, accounting for 18.4% of total installations, up 13.1% MoM and up 1.6% YoY. LFP battery installations were 46.5 GWh, accounting for 81.6% of total installations, up 3.9% MoM and up 57.7% YoY.
From January to May, cumulative power battery installations in China reached 241.4 GWh, up 50.4% YoY. Among them, cumulative ternary battery installations were 44.8 GWh, accounting for 18.6% of total installations, down 12.4% YoY. Cumulative LFP battery installations were 196.5 GWh, accounting for 81.4% of total installations, up 79.8% YoY.
