[Emerita Responds to Aznalcollar Permit Amid Ongoing Criminal Trial; IBW Project in Spain Targeting 2026 Production]
Emerita Resources Corp. has issued a statement in response to the May 30 announcement by Andalucia’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Jorge Paradela, that the exploitation license for the Aznalcollar project has been granted to Minera Los Frailes (MLF). Emerita emphasized that this decision does not impact the ongoing criminal trial related to the original public tender for the project.
Emerita’s independent Spanish legal counsel confirmed that the permit is not legally binding until published in the official gazette and remains revocable, particularly given the unresolved criminal and administrative litigation. This includes a legal challenge from environmental group Ecologistas en Acción regarding MLF’s proposed water discharge plan, which could further delay development.
Emerita intends to appeal the decision through its Spanish subsidiary and reserves the right to pursue damages if the court rules in its favor.
Separately, Emerita continues to advance its Iberian Belt West (IBW) project in Spain. The company expects to secure all necessary permits by early 2026, paving the way for development. The latest mineral resource estimate pegs the inferred resources at 25.76 million tonnes with an average grade of 8.51% zinc equivalent.
