[BC Launches ‘One Project, One Review’ to Accelerate Mine Permitting While Protecting IP and Indigenous Rights]
British Columbia’s Minister of Mining and Critical Minerals, Jagrup Brar, announced that major mine permitting timelines have shortened by over one-third since he took office six months ago. The province is now piloting a “One Project, One Review” framework aimed at streamlining critical mineral development while strengthening partnerships with Indigenous communities.

New rules, effective March 26, introduced a Mineral Claims Consultation Framework that triggers a 20-day response period for First Nations upon application submission. To safeguard prospectors’ intellectual property, the government only discloses applicant names and claim locations—technical or exploration data is withheld.

Brar emphasized the parallel review process has reduced regional permitting backlogs by 52% without compromising environmental assessment standards. “We are not cutting corners, nor compromising reconciliation,” he stated.

According to a May report by the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC), 27 advanced-stage projects could generate C$90 billion in economic activity, including 35,000 jobs and C$12 billion in tax revenue. Long-term, these projects could contribute nearly C$1 trillion to the economy if permitting is expedited.
