On May 31, US President Trump stated on May 30 local time that starting from June 4, import tariffs on steel and aluminum would be raised from 25% to 50%. On May 31 local time, Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell responded, saying that Australia's stance has been consistent and clear. These tariffs are unreasonable and not the act of a friend. Farrell said, "This is an act of economic self-harm that will only harm consumers and businesses that rely on free and fair trade. We will continue to push for and strongly advocate for the removal of these tariffs.
