[Alcoa's Mining Expansion in Perth Hills Open for Public Feedback]
For the first time in its 60-year history, Alcoa's bauxite mining operations in the Jarrah forests near Serpentine are open to public comment. On Thursday, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) launched a 12-week consultation period regarding the company's proposed expansion.
The public is invited to provide feedback on two key proposals: the first involves clearing an additional 75 square kilometres of Jarrah forest to extend the Huntley Bauxite mine, and the second seeks a 5% production increase at the Pinjarra alumina refinery.
These proposals come amid ongoing concerns about the environmental impact on Jarrah forests, Alcoa’s shortfalls in meeting government rehabilitation standards, and the risk of contaminating Perth’s drinking water. Earlier this year, WA's Water Corporation raised alarms over potential contamination of the Serpentine Dam, which could lead to emergency measures such as boil water notices or the distribution of bottled water. In an interview, Alcoa’s Director of Regulatory Approvals, Kane Moyle, discussed the company’s expansion plans and its track record on land rehabilitation.
