According to reports from multiple media outlets, including Reuters, the Brazilian government has decided to extend trade protection measures for the steel industry in an attempt to control the growing imports of steel.
The Administrative Executive Council (Gecex) of the Brazilian Foreign Trade Chamber recently decided to extend the policy of imposing a 25% tariff on steel products for an additional 12 months and maintain the quota system for steel imports.
Additionally, last year, Brazil imposed a 25% tariff on 19 types of steel products. This time, the government has expanded the list of products subject to trade protection measures by four, bringing the total to 23 steel products currently covered.
It is said that the inclusion of these four steel products in the tariff list is due to a sharp increase in their imports last year.
Reuters reported that the relevant statement did not specify the new products affected by the tariff, but it stated that steel imported under trade agreements or special regimes would not be counted towards the quota.
