[Guinea Moves to Restructure Mining Sector Through Permit Revocations]
Guinea’s government has revoked nearly 200 mining permits deemed non-compliant, placing the affected zones into a strategic reserve. Transport Minister and government spokesperson Ousmane Gaoual Diallo emphasized that the decision is not punitive but part of a broader effort to reform and enforce order in the mining sector. The aim is to build a more credible, transparent, and law-abiding industry.
He noted that the actions are based on legal contracts and the country’s mining code, which allows for appeal by affected companies. Firms that lost their permits may reapply when concessions are re-tendered, as long as they meet new conditions. However, those found guilty of serious violations will be barred from re-entry. The government insists that prior financial and social commitments must still be fulfilled, as it seeks to uphold national interests and legal standards.
