[Rio Tinto to Expand Amrun Bauxite Mine to Secure Long-Term Supply]
Rio Tinto will commence early works and finalize engineering studies to expand bauxite production at its Amrun mine in Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula, targeting first output from the new development by 2029. The Kangwinan project—named in consultation with the Wik Waya Traditional Owners—will involve constructing a new mine and expanding the existing Amrun port to nearly double production from the Weipa Southern operations, increasing capacity by up to 20 million tonnes annually on top of the current 23 million tonnes.
The expansion is intended to offset declining output from the Andoom and Gove mines, both expected to close by decade’s end. A final investment decision is scheduled for 2026, contingent on cultural heritage and environmental assessments and regulatory approvals. Early works approved include a 250-room workers’ camp and initial road access. The project is expected to support over 800 construction jobs and retain the existing workforce in the region, ensuring continued supply to Rio Tinto’s Australian refineries and export markets.
