[Emirates Global Aluminium plots UAE anode manufacturing plant]
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) plans to build a 300,000 tonnes-per-year anode manufacturing facility in Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa Economic Zone by 2028. The project, a joint venture with Chinese anode producer Sunstone (55% Sunstone, 45% EGA), aims to localize anode production and reduce EGA’s reliance on imports. EGA currently produces 1.35 million tonnes of anodes annually, but still imports a portion of its needs.
The facility would not only meet EGA’s internal demand but could also position the UAE as a global anode exporter—second only to China. Construction is slated to start in 2026 following a completed feasibility study. The project supports the UAE’s "Make it in the Emirates" initiative and aligns with EGA’s strategy to increase domestic procurement, which already accounts for 40% of its global spend.
