[Stitt announces $4 billion aluminum smelter coming to Oklahoma]
On May 19, 2025, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt announced that Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) will build a $4 billion primary aluminum smelter at the Port of Inola, marking the first such plant constructed in the U.S. in nearly 50 years. The agreement, part of a broader $200 billion commercial package between the U.S. and the UAE, includes over $1 billion in state incentives—$275 million in direct aid, $735 million in tax offsets, and more than $500 million in tax increment financing.

The facility is projected to produce 600,000 tonnes of aluminum annually and create 1,000 direct and 1,800 indirect jobs. However, it also raises environmental concerns, with each ton of aluminum generating at least two tons of potentially hazardous waste. The project still requires legislative approval but has backing from state leadership. It represents a major step in Oklahoma's strategy to become a hub for critical mineral and materials processing.
