[Hydro reviews major upgrade of hydropower production at Rjukan]
Hydro plans a significant modernization of its hydropower facilities in Rjukan, Norway, and will begin an impact assessment in Q2 2025, aiming to apply for a concession in early 2026. The proposed project includes a new pumped storage power plant and a tunnel linking Møsvatn and Tinnsjøen. If realized, the expansion could add up to 750 MW in maximum capacity and increase gross annual production from the Måna river section by up to 50%, while maintaining net output at around 3 TWh due to pumping adjustments and reduced losses.
The upgrade is intended to improve power system flexibility, enable better water resource utilization, and supply electricity during peak demand. It also seeks to generate regional economic benefits and lower flood risk. Hydro emphasizes collaboration with local communities and aims to minimize environmental impact. The plan aligns with Hydro’s long-term goals of strengthening Norway’s renewable energy base and ensuring power availability for national industry.
