Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Shandong Contemporary Amperex Technology Limited ("Shandong CATL"), a subsidiary of CATL, recently launched production at its energy storage and power battery manufacturing base in Yanzhou district, Jining city, marking its first operational facility in northern China and its largest site in the region by annual planned production capacity.

Built to the "Lighthouse + Zero Carbon Factory" standard, the new base features some of the world's most advanced digital and intelligent production lines, said CATL.

The facility will be developed in three phases. Phase I, now operational, covers more than 800 mu (approx. 53 hectares) with a total floor area of 520,000 square meters and a planned production capacity of 60GWh. It includes fully integrated smart production and living support infrastructure. Phases II and III are scheduled to come online over the next two years, ultimately forming a globally leading, hundred-billion-yuan-level new energy battery industrial cluster.

Complementing the plant, CATL is also building a 1.8-billion-yuan centralized photovoltaic power project in Yanzhou, with a total capacity of 450MW. Of this, 317MW has already been connected to the grid, generating a cumulative 580 million kilowatt-hours of electricity.

Additionally, a 900-million-yuan shared energy storage station with a designed capacity of 200MW/400MWh has completed its first phase (100MW/200MWh), having delivered 68 million kilowatt-hours of stored electricity so far.

A company representative noted that the project establishes a complete new energy industry chain, integrating green energy supply on the front end with battery application scenarios on the back end—an essential feature of the strategic layout.

Since initiating its investment in Shandong in 2022, CATL has steadily deepened its presence in the province, viewing it as a key strategic region.

On the day of the new plant's launch, CATL signed several framework agreements to expand its local partnerships: jointly building a zero-carbon city with Jining, promoting battery-swap models with the Shandong province's Department of Transportation, co-developing a new energy industrial park with the Jining municipal government, and partnering with Jining Port and Shipping Development Co. Ltd. to create a green, intelligent demonstration route on the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.

CATL Chairman and CEO Robin Zeng emphasized that the company's ambitions go beyond battery manufacturing. Leveraging its strengths in product and technology, alongside its carbon-reduction experience, CATL aims to build an efficient, clean, and safe zero-carbon industrial ecosystem. He noted that more innovative new energy businesses are expected to land in Shandong, contributing to the province's green, low-carbon, and high-quality development.

Looking ahead, CATL plans to deepen cooperation with Shandong to establish pilot zones for battery-swap networks for new energy vehicles, develop the low-altitude economy in the Bohai Rim region, promote the electrification of inland and coastal shipping, and accelerate the construction of the Dongying Zero-Carbon Industrial Park, creating more benchmark applications for zero-carbon scenarios across the province.

World's First Mass-Produced Sodium-Ion Battery Passenger Vehicle Officially Unveiled
On February 5, Changan Automobile unveiled its global sodium-ion battery strategy, and the world's first mass-produced sodium-ion battery passenger vehicle was officially introduced. Test data shows that the vehicle equipped with CATL's sodium-ion battery delivers nearly three times the discharge power compared to conventional lithium iron phosphate vehicles with the same battery capacity under -30°C conditions. In extreme cold environments of -40°C, it maintains over 90% capacity retention, and it can still discharge stably even at the extreme low temperature of -50°C.
