On May 17, China's GAC Group introduced two new energy car models, AION Y and Trumpchi ES9, to the Ethiopian market for the first time, supporting Ethiopia's green transportation transformation and Sino-Ethiopian automotive industry cooperation. Balew Hassan, State Minister of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics of Ethiopia, stated that there are already over 100,000 EVs on the road in Ethiopia, and the government plans to increase this number to 500,000 within the next 10 years to replace the vast majority of internal combustion engine vehicles. According to CAAM analysis, in June 2026, the passenger vehicle market continued to exhibit structural differentiation, with domestic demand remaining under pressure, exports growing rapidly, internal combustion engine vehicles declining notably due to factors such as high and fluctuating oil prices, and new energy vehicles maintaining steady growth while further increasing their market share. In June 2026, passenger vehicle production and sales reached 2.373 million and 2.402 million units, up 5.9% and 6.6% MoM, but down 2.8% and 5.3% YoY, respectively. From January to June 2026, passenger vehicle production and sales reached 12.721 million and 12.72 million units, down 5.9% and 6% YoY, respectively.
