On May 2, 2025, TotalEnergies and OQ Exploration & Production (OQEP) officially broke ground on the Marsa LNG project at Sohar Port, Oman. The plant, developed by Marsa LNG LLC (TotalEnergies 80%, OQEP 20%), will have a 1 Mt/y LNG production capacity and begin commercial operations in Q1 2028, primarily supplying LNG as marine fuel in the Gulf.

Marsa LNG is designed to be one of the world’s lowest carbon intensity LNG plants, powered entirely by a 300 MWp solar farm. Expected emissions are under 3 kg CO₂e/boe—about 90% below the global LNG average. It will also establish the first LNG bunkering hub in the Middle East, featuring the Monte Shams bunkering vessel stationed in Sohar.

Leaders from TotalEnergies, OQEP, and Oman’s government emphasized the strategic role of the project in supporting Oman Vision 2040 and the global energy transition. Marsa LNG showcases a model of clean energy infrastructure combining low emissions, renewable power, and maritime sector decarbonization.
