[Guinea Moves to Cancel EGA’s Mining Licence]
On May 7, 2025, Reuters reported that the Guinean government has initiated proceedings to revoke the mining licence of Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), according to sources familiar with the matter. The move follows a suspension of EGA’s operations in October 2024. EGA, jointly owned by Mubadala and the Investment Corporation of Dubai, operates one of Guinea’s largest bauxite mines via its subsidiary, Guinea Alumina Corporation (GAC).
The company exported approximately 14 million tonnes of bauxite in 2022, but the halt in operations led to a decline to 10.8 million tonnes in 2024. The mining concession covers 690 square kilometres and contains an estimated 400 million tonnes of bauxite. Guinea, the world’s second-largest bauxite producer, appears to be aligning with a regional shift where military-led governments are asserting greater control over mining resources and contracts.
