Focusing on the Development of Germanium, Gallium, and Zinc Resources: Sinomine Resource Group's Tsumeb Smelter in Namibia Commences Polymetallic Recovery Project

Published: Apr 30, 2025 15:33

On April 28, the groundbreaking ceremony for the polymetallic recovery project at the Tsumeb Smelter of Sinomine Resource Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Sinomine Resource") was held. Wang Pingwei, Chairman and President of Sinomine Resource, attended the ceremony and delivered a speech.

Wang Pingwei stated that Sinomine Resource firmly supports the polymetallic recovery project at the Tsumeb Smelter and expects to transform the smelter into an important polymetallic recovery base. The reason for Sinomine Resource's continuous investment in the Tsumeb Smelter primarily stems from its confidence in the market demand for rare and critical minor metals, as well as in the strategic transformation and future development of the Tsumeb Smelter.

As the "pearl" of Namibia's mining industry, the Tsumeb Smelter is renowned worldwide for its exceptional technology in processing complex copper concentrates. Since its full acquisition by Sinomine Resource in August 2024, this century-old smelter has embraced opportunities for strategic upgrades. Leveraging Sinomine Resource's capabilities in resource integration within the global mining sector, the Tsumeb Smelter is accelerating its transformation into a comprehensive polymetallic recovery center.

The project focuses on the development of strategic metal resources such as germanium, gallium, and zinc, with a planned total investment of $223 million. It is designed to process 200,000 mt of slag annually. Upon completion, it is expected to produce 33 mt of germanium ingots, 11 mt of industrial-grade gallium, and 10,900 mt of zinc ingots per year. While enhancing resource utilization, this project will minimize its environmental impact, demonstrating Sinomine Resource's commitment to practicing "green mining" and making new contributions to Namibia's economic development.

Silicon Metal Market Review for January and Outlook for February
In January, the silicon metal market experienced a relatively loose supply-demand balance, with a theoretical inventory buildup of approximately 30,000 mt. In February, both supply and demand contracted simultaneously, and the market is expected to show a tight balance or minor destocking. The current high industry inventory still requires time to be digested, and the sustainability of destocking remains a key variable affecting price trends and market sentiment.

A plant in northern China is calling for bids for indium ingots and bismuth ingots
SMM, February 6 - According to SMM’s investigation of market information, a large smelter in northern China began public bidding for a certain quantity of indium ingots and bismuth ingots starting yesterday. Market sources indicate that the starting price for these indium ingots exceeds 4,000 yuan per kilogram, while the starting price for bismuth ingots is above 150,000 yuan per ton. The bidding results are expected to be announced before the Spring Festival. Market participants note that, given the clear trend of sluggish trading activity ahead of the Spring Festival, the timing of this bidding is not ideal. However, the relatively favorable starting prices have generated considerable market anticipation for the outcome of the bidding.
