[SMM Tin Midday Review: SHFE Tin Prices in the Doldrums, Downstream and End-User Enterprises Exercise Caution in Purchasing] As of the midday close today, the most-traded SHFE tin contract SN2505 was temporarily quoted at 260,900 yuan/mt, down slightly by 0.5% from yesterday's settlement price. The intraday fluctuation range was 259,340-263,350 yuan/mt. Trading volume and open interest contracted slightly on a MoM basis, with cautious market participation. Policy Easing Expectations: US Treasury Secretary Bessent recently stated that "high tariffs between China and the US are unsustainable," suggesting that both sides may partially ease trade frictions in the coming months. This news has alleviated market concerns about suppressed demand for tin used in PV welding strips (due to the US tariff hike on Southeast Asian solar products), supporting a sentiment recovery in tin prices.

Lunchtime Commentary on the Most-Traded SHFE Tin Contract on April 28, 2025

As of the lunchtime close today, the most-traded SHFE tin contract SN2505 was temporarily quoted at 260,900 yuan/mt, down slightly by 0.5% from the previous day's settlement price. The intraday trading range was 259,340-263,350 yuan/mt. Trading volume and open interest contracted slightly on a MoM basis, with market participants trading cautiously.

Policy Easing Expectations: US Treasury Secretary Bessent recently stated that "high tariffs between China and the US are unsustainable," suggesting that both sides may partially ease trade frictions in the coming months. This news has alleviated market concerns about suppressed demand for tin used in PV welding strips (due to the US tariff hike on Southeast Asian solar products), supporting a recovery in tin price sentiment.

Uncertainty Risks: The Trump administration may still resume aggressive tariff policies. US Fed Governor Waller warned that "if unemployment rises, it may support an interest rate cut," with macro policy expectations fluctuating, dampening bullish confidence.

Supply-Side Disruptions: Coexistence of Production Resumptions and Short-Term Shortages

The production resumption at the Bisie tin mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has entered its second phase, with daily average production gradually rebounding, but full recovery is not expected until June. The Wa State production resumption meeting in Myanmar is imminent, and if successful, incremental supply may be released in two months, indicating growing long-term supply pressure.

Spot Market: Traders reported sluggish trading today, with high prices suppressing downstream stocking willingness. Smelters held prices firm and were reluctant to sell, intensifying market wait-and-see sentiment.

Avantus' Aratina 1 Project Reaches Commercial Operations, Adds 200 MW Solar and 500 MWh Storage to CA Grid
Avantus announced that its Aratina 1 project has reached commercial operations, delivering 200 MW of solar and 500 MWh of energy storage to the California grid. The project is located in Kern County and will provide energy and capacity services to the CAISO market, supporting California’s reliability needs during evening ramp periods and summer peak events. Aratina 1’s COD adds to the growing inventory of operational solar-plus-storage assets in the CAISO footprint, which remains the most mature market for co-located renewable and battery projects in the United States. The project’s operational status also validates Avantus’ development and construction execution platform as the company continues to scale its portfolio.

Eolian Begins Construction on 200 MW Energy Storage Project in Ohio
Independent power producer Eolian has commenced construction on the Flint Grid, a 200 MW / 1.06 GWh energy storage project located in Jersey Township, Licking County, Ohio. The project represents one of the larger standalone battery storage developments in the PJM interconnection region and is designed to provide capacity, energy arbitrage, and ancillary services to the Midwest grid. Ohio has seen accelerating BESS development activity as developers target the state’s favorable interconnection queue positions and growing demand from data center load growth. The groundbreaking signals a transition from permitting and financing to execution, with the project expected to contribute to PJM’s resource adequacy requirements upon completion.

European Energy Closes Financing for 40MW Battery at Mokoan Solar Farm in Victoria, Backed by CIS
European Energy has reached financial close on the 40 MW / 80 MWh co-located battery storage system at the Mokoan Hybrid Solar Farm in Victoria, with non-recourse financing provided by Deutsche Bank. The project was selected under Australia’s Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), reflecting federal government backing for bankable renewable-plus-storage projects. Financial close on a non-recourse basis demonstrates the improving bankability of merchant-exposed or partially contracted BESS assets in the Australian market. The Mokoan project will provide dispatchable capacity to the Victorian grid, which faces growing evening peak demand and coal retirement timelines. This transaction adds to the growing evidence that Australian BESS projects are achieving investment-grade financing structures.
