China's Car Imports Decline Sharply by 39% YoY in Q1 2025

From January to March 2025, 95,000 units of imported cars were recorded. Cui Dongshu, Secretary General of the Passenger Car Association, stated that China's car imports had been declining at an average annual rate of around 8% from 1.24 million units in 2017 to only 800,000 units in 2023. In 2024, car imports were 700,000 units, down 12% YoY. From January to March 2025, 95,000 units of imported cars were recorded, a 39% YoY decrease, marking a significant and rare decline for the first quarter. Among these, 39,000 units were imported in March, a 27% decrease, showing a slight improvement in the rate of decline.
