【IMF Warns Trump's Aluminum Tariffs to Curb Global Economic Growth】
On April 22, 2025, the IMF warned that the global trade tensions triggered by US President Trump's imposition of aluminum tariffs would drag down the global economy. Since the announcement of a 10% base tariff on aluminum products and an additional 245% tariff on Chinese products in early April, global market volatility has increased, and policy uncertainty has risen.
The IMF revised down its global growth forecast for 2025 from 3.3% to 2.8%, and the US from 2.8% to 1.8%. Major aluminum exporters such as China, Canada, Mexico, and South Korea face the risk of trade contraction, and the contribution of the aluminum industry to global GDP may decline. The IMF emphasized that if trade frictions persist, global growth will further slow down.
