New National Standards for EV Batteries to Take Effect on July 1, 2025. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently announced that China will implement new national standards for power batteries used in EVs starting July 1, 2026. The standards, titled "Safety Requirements for Power Batteries Used in Electric Vehicles," are mandatory national standards organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. They include 7 individual tests and 17 battery pack or system tests. The Ministry stated that this revision primarily adds new test items such as bottom impact tests for batteries and safety tests after fast charging cycles. It also strengthens safety requirements like thermal diffusion, upgrading the alarm for power battery fires and explosions from 5 minutes before the event to preventing fires and explosions altogether. This aims to reduce the incidence of power battery self-ignition accidents from the product design stage, further ensuring the safety of consumers' lives and property.
