According to SMM, Chile's National Mining Company (Enami) is in negotiations with manufacturers and traders interested in raising funds for a copper smelter project costing over $1.4 billion. Chile, the world's largest copper producer, is striving to curb the decline in domestic copper output. Enami's CEO, Ivan Mlynarz, stated that copper users and global traders have approached the company and may provide funds to rebuild the Paipote smelter, which was mothballed early last year. The project is economically feasible, considering it will utilize more efficient capacity and produce by-products such as gold and sulphuric acid. To promote the development of local copper smelting capacity, Chile is pursuing sustainable development. Enami has sought advisors to prepare funds for the project and will hold 100% of the project's shares. One option is for metal buyers to prepay for copper.
