Published: Apr 15, 2025 09:39 (GMT+8)
SMM Rare Earth Morning Meeting Summary: Market Activity Increases, Light Rare Earth Prices Rebound. Yesterday, the prices of mainstream rare earth products generally rebounded. After Pr-Nd oxide fell below 430,000 yuan/mt, market acceptance significantly improved. With increased trading activity, the price of Pr-Nd oxide warmed up. The prices of dysprosium and terbium continued to hold up well, while gadolinium and holmium products experienced a jump initially and then pulled back.

SMM April 15 News:

Rare Earth Ore

Prices: Rare earth carbonate prices were around 35,000 yuan/mt, monazite prices were around 42,500 yuan/mt, and medium-yttrium, europium-rich ore prices were around 189,000 yuan/mt.

Supply and Demand: Currently, suppliers in the rare earth ore sector are heavily cautious, with low actual willingness to sell, and rare earth ore prices remain stable.

Rare Earth Oxides

Prices: The quotation range for Pr-Nd oxide was around 430,000-432,000 yuan/mt, the mainstream quotation range for dysprosium oxide was 1.69-1.7 million yuan/mt, and terbium oxide prices were adjusted to around 7.25-7.3 million yuan/mt.

Supply and Demand: Yesterday, prices of mainstream rare earth products rebounded overall. After Pr-Nd oxide fell below 430,000 yuan/mt, market acceptance significantly improved, and with increased trading activity, Pr-Nd oxide prices recovered. Dysprosium and terbium prices also continued to hold up well, but gadolinium and holmium products experienced a jump initially and then pulled back.

Rare Earth Metals

Prices: The mainstream quotation range for Pr-Nd alloy was 528,000-532,000 yuan/mt, dysprosium-iron alloy prices were around 1.65-1.67 million yuan/mt, and terbium metal prices were around 8.9-9 million yuan/mt.

Supply and Demand: Metal manufacturers maintained firm quotations despite high oxide prices, and low-priced sources were hard to find. However, magnetic material enterprises still had poor procurement conditions, and back-and-forth negotiations between upstream and downstream remained intense.

NdFeB Blank

Prices: NdFeB blank N38 (Ce) was quoted at 142-152 yuan/kg; NdFeB blank 40M was quoted at 188-198 yuan/kg; NdFeB blank 40H was quoted at 192-202 yuan/kg; NdFeB blank 45SH (ce) was quoted at 242-262 yuan/kg.

Supply and Demand: Currently, due to export restrictions, some magnetic material enterprises face export limitations, and the overall market is in a wait-and-see state. Enterprises are cautious in procurement, waiting for further release of market demand.

NdFeB Scrap

Prices: Pr-Nd recycled from NdFeB scrap was quoted at 440-451 yuan/kg; dysprosium recycled from NdFeB scrap was quoted at 1,609-1,635 yuan/kg; terbium recycled from NdFeB scrap was quoted at 5,287-5,341 yuan/kg.

Supply and Demand: Currently, the scrap market showed mediocre performance with low trading volume. Suppliers generally maintained a wait-and-see attitude, unwilling to sell at low prices, and the stalemate may continue in the short term.

[SMM Rare Earth Daily Review: Rare earth prices consolidate on a subdued note; Pr-Nd holds steady while terbium series weakens] In the short term, price direction will depend on the pace of order releases from downstream magnetic material producers. Pr-Nd quotes remain firm with cost support still in place, and large-scale tender purchases by major mills may drive gradual release of rigid demand, though acceptance of high prices is limited and upside is constrained. After consecutive declines in the terbium series, attention should be paid to whether a phased downtrend is forming; if oxides and metals continue to decline in tandem, this could weigh on market sentiment. Dysprosium, gadolinium, holmium, and erbium lack independent drivers and are expected to remain largely stable in the short term.

[Tata Steel Meramandali Maintenance to Cause Dip in HRC Supply as Distributor Allocations Tighten]
Tata Steel's Meramandali plant in Odisha is undergoing maintenance, which is expected to cause a temporary dip in hot-rolled coil (HRC) supply, according to SMM market sources. Market participants indicated that distributors have been informed they will receive only around 15% of their usual HRC allocations during the maintenance period. A person familiar with the situation said the maintenance could last approximately three weeks. Meramandali is one of Tata Steel's major flat-steel production facilities, with a hot-strip mill capacity previously reported at approximately 5.4 million tonnes per annum. The integrated steel plant has an installed crude-steel capacity of 5.6 million tonnes per annum. The reported reduction in distributor allocations indicates tighter HRC availability in the domestic market. However, the actual production loss, units affected and duration of the maintenance remain unconfirmed. Tata Steel has not publicly confirmed the reported allocation restrictions or the three-week maintenance timeline.

[SMM Rare Earth Morning Meeting Summary: Rare Earth Market Stable After Holiday, Downstream Just-in-Time Procurement Awaits Trading Recovery] Ore end offers continued at pre-holiday levels, but downstream separation enterprises mostly restocked based on just-in-time needs with limited willingness to chase higher prices. On-site transactions were sparse, and ore prices remained in a stalemate overall.
