[SMM Analysis]Recently, the United States has generally increased reciprocal tariffs on countries worldwide. However, the overall impact of this round of increased reciprocal tariffs on new energy vehicles is limited。This article summarizes the tariffs on new energy vehicles shipped from major countries around the globe at the current stage.

Recently, the United States has generally increased reciprocal tariffs on countries around the world. However, the increase in this round of reciprocal tariffs has a limited overall impact on new energy vehicles. The main reason is that new energy vehicles and their components are included in the exemption list for this increase in reciprocal tariffs, as shown in the figure below:

Therefore, at this stage, the U.S. tariff policy on new energy vehicles in 2025 mainly includes the following:

  • Base Tariff: Starting from April 5, 2025, the United States will impose a basic tariff of 10% on all countries worldwide.

  • Specific Product Tariffs: Tariffs on imported vehicles and parts: Starting from April 2, 2025, the United States will add a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and parts, covering key components such as gasoline vehicles, new energy vehicles, and batteries.

  • Other Tariffs: The United States will impose a "Section 301 tariff" of 100% on new energy vehicles from China; the United States will impose a "fentanyl tariff" of 20% on China.

So, the tariffs on new energy vehicles shipped from major countries around the world are currently summarized as follows:

However, due to the extremely small proportion of direct exports of new energy vehicles from China to the United States, the total export volume of new energy vehicles from China in 2024 was 2.237 million units, with 27,000 units exported to the United States. The proportion of new energy vehicle exports from China to the U.S. in 2024 was less than 2% of the total export volume of new energy vehicles from China, thus having a minimal impact on the export of new energy vehicles from China.
