Chile's Codelco has regained its position as the world's largest copper producer, after reporting slightly higher production in 2024 than BHP.

According to institutional estimates, the Chilean state-owned miner produced 1.44 million mt of copper last year, while BHP's attributable production was 1.43 million mt.

Codelco has been working to complete key projects that will develop richer deposits in its aging mines. The company is also seeking additional investments, including early-stage negotiations with Saudi Arabia.

The mining company is also exploring new technologies, including a rock-crushing technology developed by Robert Friedland's I-Pulse Inc., which uses electricity to break rocks more efficiently.

Mine recovery is a top priority for Codelco, as declining ore quality requires the company to mine more raw material to maintain production levels.

Meanwhile, BHP is investing $10.8 billion to modernize its aging operations in Chile. BHP manages the world's largest copper mine, Escondida, in Chile.

**Copper Prices Soar on US Tariff Expectations**

Demand for copper remains strong, as miners rush to ship copper to the US amid reports that the US may impose tariffs on copper earlier than expected.

Last week, New York copper futures reached a record high of around $11,840 per mt.

At the recent Financial Times Commodities Summit in Switzerland, major traders predicted that copper prices could exceed $12,000 per mt this year as global supply concerns intensify.

Fed Rate Decision Uncertainty Rises: Warsh's Jackson Hole Debut and PCE Data in Focus
US Fed rate suspense escalates again — Warsh's Jackson Hole debut on 8/28 + PCE finale on 8/26. CME showed a 59.9% probability of maintaining rates in September and a 40.1% probability of a 25bp hike. Warsh will make his first appearance at Jackson Hole at 10 a.m. Eastern Time on 8/28 (dubbed the "Warsh debut" by the market). Since taking office, Warsh has adopted a "quieter Fed" strategy (removing forward guidance, not disclosing the dot plot, and shortening the statement), and Goldman Sachs warned that communication ambiguity would exacerbate market fluctuations. July CPI rose 3.4% YoY (cooling for two consecutive months), while core PCE remained elevated (3.7% YoY in June), with inflation having stayed above the 2% target for five years.

US Federal Debt Hits $40 Trillion, Treasury Yields Surge Despite Buyback Expansion
US federal debt tops $40 trillion for the first time + 30-year US Treasury yield at 5.27% + Treasury buyback expansion failsThe total US federal debt topped $40.05 trillion for the first time on August 19, and interest expenses this fiscal year are expected to be nearly $1.2 trillion (already exceeding the national defense budget). The 30-year US Treasury yield breached 5.337% intraday on August 18 (a new high since 2007), and pulled back to 5.27% on August 21; the 10-year yield was 4.73%. Treasury Secretary Bessent announced on August 20 that the single auction size of long-term Treasury buybacks would double (from $2 billion to $4 billion), but the intervention only worked for two days, and long-end yields rebounded quickly. Macquarie warned that the demand for cheaper financing may force the US Fed to be dragged into the "financial stability" mandate and even return to easing.

[SMM Analysis: Policy Framework Review: Relationship Between Shandong Province's "Standardized Management Measures for Industrial Renewable Resource Recycling (Trial)" and Central Policies] The "Standardized Management Measures for Industrial Renewable Resource Recycling in Shandong Province (Trial)" (hereinafter referred to as the "Management Measures") was issued. SMM learned that the "Management Measures" implemented in Shandong Province this time is a "local implementation version" of a series of central policy requirements, but it is not a simple transcription of a single central document; rather, it is the first provincial-level comprehensive management measure that integrates multiple central policy lines from various ministries and dimensions over the past year or more...
