With the rapid development of the NEV industry, the number of power lithium-ion batteries has been growing exponentially. Currently, the recycling of cathode materials for lithium batteries has been largely commercialized, but the recycling of retired anode graphite is still in its infancy.

According to industry forecasts, the total amount of scrap graphite anodes to be recycled in 2025 will exceed 150,000 mt, with an annual compound growth rate of around 40%. The market potential and demand for both virgin and scrap graphite anode materials are enormous.

However, the supply of non-renewable graphite resources is limited, and the environmental pressure from discarded graphite is significant. High-quality, low-cost repair and recycling of scrap graphite with high impurity content and severely damaged crystal structures remain industry challenges. Currently, the industry still lacks large-scale, low-carbon, and environmentally friendly solutions.

  • What are the main challenges faced by current scrap lithium battery anode recycling technologies?

  • In which fields do recycled anode materials have potential application value?

  • What are the possible future directions and trends in scrap lithium battery anode recycling technology?

SMM will launch the Lithium Battery Recycling Forum at the CLNB 2025 New Energy Entire Industry Chain Expo, April 16-18, 2025. Jun Gong, Deputy General Manager of Hunan Brunp Shanhe New Materials Co., Ltd., will be a keynote speaker, delivering a presentation on the high-quality recycling applications of scrap lithium battery anodes.

Jun Gong, male, 37 years old, holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Central South University (2015) and completed postdoctoral research in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University (2023). He has been engaged in research and technology development of new energy-saving systems and new energy equipment systems for 15 years. He has led and completed one national, one provincial, and one municipal-level project, and has participated in over 10 scientific research projects as a core member. He has published more than 30 academic papers in top-tier journals such as Applied Energy and has applied for/obtained over 50 patents. Since 2020, he has served as Technical Director, General Manager Assistant, and Deputy General Manager and Director of Brunp Shanhe.
